The management of the company's online games has been handed over to Lesta Studio, a former subsidiary and former partner of Wargaming, which is responsible for developing the "World of Warships" naval counterpart to the "Tanks". It is assumed that this step is caused by the pressure of European business.
A Belarusian company registered in Cyprus posted a corresponding announcement on the page of the social network Linkedin. The management announced that they did not intend to do business in Russia and Belarus. Russian and Belarusian users will be able to continue playing World of Tanks and World of Warships, staying on the territory of their countries, management has been transferred to the St. Petersburg company Lesta Studio. The Minsk office is closing with the payment of all necessary benefits to workers, the company has promised to take care of all its employees, provide them with safety and support.
Lesta Studio was acquired by Wargaming in 2011 and has been developing World of Warships. The post on Linkedin says that Lesta Studio is no longer affiliated with Wargaming. The company also stressed that it will not benefit from its exit from the Russian and Belarusian markets, on the contrary, serious losses are expected. The reasons for making such a radical decision in the message are not named, Wargaming refers to a "strategic review of business operations around the world." The contacts of the new game operator are still unknown.
The most obvious reason is reputational risks, as well as the impact of foreign banks on the gaming community under the influence of Ukrainian officials and foreign users. So, after March 2, the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mikhail Fedorov appealed through the social network Twitter to four major gaming companies, including Wargaming, two of them - Ubisoft and Electronic Arts announced they would stop selling video games to Russia. Other companies are forced to limit interaction with Russians (pre-order and access to stores are not issued) due to difficulties in paying and conducting transactions. The video game market in Russia in 2021 brought about $180 billion to video game publishers and developers.
