Boris Zimin is accused of stock fraud.
Well-known Russian businessman and public figure Boris Zimin*, who was recognized as a foreign agent by the Ministry of Justice in 2022, is accused of fraud committed on an especially large scale. The investigation demanded that he be arrested in absentia for a month (since 2020, Zimin* has been living in Israel). According to media reports, the entrepreneur is suspected of committing fraudulent acts in the sale of securities of BelkaCar Ltd, one of the largest companies in Russia that provides short-term car rental services (car sharing).
The case was initiated by investigators in Moscow at the very end of 2022 under Part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which provides for a punishment of up to 10 years in the form of imprisonment. The accused has been put on the international wanted list. Zimin's defense * believes that the capital's commander-in-chief of the Ministry of Internal Affairs committed serious procedural offenses during the investigation. So, the decision to bring an entrepreneur as a defendant was sent to court the next day after it was issued right before the New Year holidays. Thus, according to the lawyer, Zimin* did not have the opportunity to exercise the rights granted by law and petition for the cancellation of this document. The defense believes that the charge was not actually brought, the decision was hidden, and therefore the prosecution of the entrepreneur is unlawful.
Boris Zimin* is the son of another well-known entrepreneur, Dmitry Zimin, founder and honorary president of Vimpel-Com (Beeline), who died in 2021. Dmitry Zimin was actively involved in charity work, together with his son they financed numerous Russian non-profit organizations, projects in the field of education, protection of human rights, and encouraged research in the field of natural sciences. Boris Zimin is also known for his support of the Russian media, in particular, the funds he created financed the work of the Dozhd TV channel ** (recognized by the Ministry of Justice as a foreign agent), Mediazona ** (recognized by the Ministry of Justice as a foreign agent), TV-2, as well as such publications as "Life with cerebral palsy", "Foreign literature" and others.
It is assumed that the case was initiated due to a deal in 2019, as a result of which Dmitry Zimin's company became the owner of BelkaCar Ltd, which was subsequently disputed by the sellers of the main stake. On this occasion, a major corporate conflict broke out. The heads of the legal entities involved in this conflict are now charged by Russian law enforcement officers with embezzlement of shares of BelkaCar Ltd.
