The former director of the Novosibirsk theater Alexander Kulyabin was detained on suspicion of serious embezzlement.
The former director of the Novosibirsk theater, dismissed from his post in December 2022, was detained on suspicion of serious embezzlement. A search was conducted in the apartment of Alexander Kulyabin, a criminal case on embezzlement was initiated, investigative measures are underway. Since the damage is estimated at over 1.8 million rubles (especially large amount), Kulyabin is charged with Part 4 of Art. 160 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to ten years with compensation for losses. This was reported to journalists in the regional prosecutor's office. The investigation believes that Alexander Kulyabin illegally paid large bonuses to his son, Timofey, who also previously served as the chief director at the Red Torch Theater.
Timofey Kulyabin continued the theatrical dynasty of the Kulyabins and followed in his father's footsteps. Despite his rather young age, 38, he is already a titled director and winner of the prestigious Golden Mask award for three performances: the famous Three Sisters (in sign language), Onegin and Children of the Sun. He also has other major awards to his credit.
In April 2022, Timofey resigned from the Red Torch Theater, allegedly of his own free will, and left Russia. Now he lives in Prague. After that, the Bolshoi Theater, with which Kulyabin Jr. also collaborated, canceled his performances along with the productions of Kirill Serebrennikov. Then the Novosibirsk theater made a similar decision, "for technical reasons." All references to Timofey Kulyabin have been removed from the theater’s website, almost all of his productions, except for “Children of the Sun”, are now not on stage, they were placed in the archive without indicating the name of the director. The surname of Kulyabin Jr. also does not appear in the list of directors of the Red Torch.
Alexander Kulyabin, after 23 years of running the theatre, was fired without explanation from his managerial position in December last year. The decision to dismiss was made by the founder of the theater - the Ministry of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region.
At the hearing on the choice of a measure of restraint for Kulyabin Sr., his lawyer handed over to the court the personal guarantees of Konstantin Raikin, Alexander Baluev, Elizaveta Boyarskaya, Yevgeny Mironov and Yulia Peresild. Vouched for Alexander and director of the Bolshoi Theater Vladimir Urin. According to regional media, the investigation is petitioning for the former director to be taken into custody, the court session was declared closed. According to the results of the consideration, which lasted 5 hours, Kulyabin Sr. was sent under house arrest until March 23. He does not admit guilt.
